The Seasons (Op. 37a) is a collection of twelve works for the solo piano written by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Each simple, melodic piece corresponds to a month of the year and reflects the mood of the season.

The piece for this month is “November: On the Troika” in E major. The first phrase of the song, which repeats itself and becomes more elaborate late on, seems to contain elements of the pentatonic scale as it reminds me of Chinese melodies. Overall, “November” sounds cheery and regal, like something you wouldn’t be surprised to hear in The Nutcracker.

Click here for last month’s piece - “October: Autumn Song”, in D minor.
